This book is a narrative re-imagining of the life and ministry of Phoebe, a woman mentioned by name as a leader of the early church in Romans /5(56). First part is the story of Phoebe, engagingly written as a novel. The author says she is not a novelist but I found the narrative compelling - with Phoebe's story of her life (trying to avoid spoilers here) gripping throughout.

Lurking in the background is the character who is both central and mainly absent, namely Paul/5(56). Paula is a memoir by Isabel Allende. She intended to write a straightforward narrative about the darkest experience of her own life.

But the book is a tribute to her deceased daughter Paula Frías Allende, who fell into a porphyria-induced coma in and never recovered/5.
